With the Republican Convention coming to Jacksonville, Florida, here is a report from FAIRtax-er, Jim Stehr, about an encounter with Vice President, Mike Pence, which happened last year and brought surprising results. Jim writes:
“I attended a speech given by Vice President Mike Pence on May 20, 2019 at the Schultz Center in Jacksonville. Pence spoke to promote the US-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) trade proposal to replace NAFTA. The event was sponsored by America First Policies and 300-400 people attended the event.“I spotted fellow FAIRtax Volunteers Red M. and Karen M. at the event. While wearing a FAIRtax hat and collared shirt, I handed out FAIRtax cards until stopped by a member of America First Policies, which happened just before the program began.
“Rep. John Rutherford, FL-04 shook my hand as he was quickly moving toward his place on the stage and I told him Pence was a FAIRtax co-sponsor when he was in The House and we need Rutherford's co-sponsorship. I think he simply said, “OK”, and I did not expect him to co-sponsor 23 days later.
[Congressman Rutherford signed on as a co-sponsor on 6/13/2019. Jim Stehr exemplifies the effect an individual can have on someone who holds public office.
When our FAIRtax Team later asked Congressman Rutherford what prompted him to sign on to the bill, Rutherford cited conversations with FAIRtaxers, dialogue with co-sponsors and economic growth The FAIRtax would bring].
“Senator Rick Scott shook my hand and I asked him to sponsor The FAIRtax. I asked if he would like our information card, he said yes and took it.
“After Pence's speech, I went to the meet and greet line. A Secret Service agent told me not to hand the card to Pence.
When Pence reached me, I said, "Time for The FAIRtax Mr. Pence”.
He took the card, autographed it, gave it back and said, "I love the FAIRtax”.
[A little civil disobedience isn’t a bad thing!]
