The worst thing that can happen to an airline pilot is the failure of all of your engines. This is particularly frightening when it happens to a jet full of people over a heavily populated city. This was the nightmare experienced by Captain Chesley Burnett Sullenberger III on January 15, 2009.
Moments after take-off, a bird strike caused his Airbus 320 engines to fail. He and his co-pilot had to decide where to land the plane. Sully was advised by air traffic controllers to head for nearby Teterboro Airport. As later simulations showed, if he had tried to land at the airport, the plane would have crashed and most, if not all, of the passengers and crew would have perished.
He decided to land in the Hudson River. 150 passengers and five crew members all survived the landing and were taken off the sinking plane. Sully was the last to leave the plane and took great pride that he and all the passengers and crew survived.
Whether you voted for Trump, Hillary or one of the other presidential candidates, today Donald Trump becomes the 45th President of the United States. While the U.S. economy has not lost all of its “engines” as did Sully’s plane, our country has some severe problems.
- Many people have just quit looking for work.
- We still have a tax system that encourages jobs being moved overseas.
- Many of our cities and states have huge unfunded liabilities.
- Much of the infrastructure in this country is not being properly maintained.
- Many small businesses cannot compete because of regulations and taxes.
- Many do not believe that their children will have as good a life as they had.
- The income tax/payroll tax system penalizes people who pay their taxes because of the growing evasion of the present system.
- Many people complain that they have less hope for the future.
Like Sully, Trump knows that, as John Kennedy said, “A rising tide lifts all boats.” President Trump knows that many of the “way things have been done” are not working.
In business, President Trump was judged not by “trying” but by succeeding. He seems to believe that Congress and the federal government should be judged the same way. Ultimately, if President Trump is successful in “safely landing the plane”, we all win.
This approach is the reason that there is a real opportunity to enact the FAIRtax. We just need to be sure that our message is not drowned out by the special interests who put their self-interest above ours

Through the "Hope and Change" of the last eight years and the promises to "Make America Great Again," what is Congress and the new administration offering us as tax reform? At this point, both President Trump and the Speaker Ryan are offering a modification of the current failed system. As Kerry Bowers, one of The FAIRtax Guys interviewees, said about Speaker Ryan's "A Better Way" plan, "It transforms the tax plan from a personal income tax, a corporate income tax and a payroll tax enforced and administered by the IRS to a system that includes a personal income tax, a corporate income tax and a payroll tax enforced and administered by the IRS."
