In 1954, Congress enacted the clergy housing allowance which allows a church to provide a housing allowance to its minister that is not taxable as income to the minister. In modern times the first to speak out for prison reform, for humane treatment of the mentally ill, for abolition of capital punishment, for women’s right to vote, for death with dignity for the terminally ill, and for the right to choose contraception, sterilization and abortion have been freethinkers, just as they were the first to call for an end to slavery. Many pundits and spokespeople for the Swamp (they are often the same) shrilly denounce the recent income tax plan because it “unfairly” limits the state and local tax deduction to $10,000. Discounting that most of these spokespeople and members of the Swamp live in states with high state and local taxes, the argument seems to be that all of the residents of the other states should “subsidize” the state tax burden paid by the people who elect to reside in states with high state and local taxes.
