OPEN LETTER TO PRESIDENT TRUMP

This week’s Grassroots Corner comes from our FAIRtax supporter David Boone of Houston, Minnesota. David writes:

OPEN LETTER TO PRESIDENT TRUMP:

HENRY FORD AND THE FAIRtax®

Ok, so Henry Ford died 50 years before the FAIRtax was first introduced in Congress. What they have in common is that they are both icons for free markets, and free markets can do astounding things. To get his enterprise off the ground, Ford had to be a true explorer, going where no man had gone before.

IN ORDER FOR US TO REVITALIZE THIS NASCENT ECONOMY, we too need to consider an idea which has never been tried anywhere in the world. But as Ford proved, we needn't fear trying something totally new, in fact that has always been the American way.

Ford proved that profit is not maximized by selling a few cars at a high price, but rather by selling a lot of cars at a low price. In other words, when you bake a bigger pie, everyone gets a bigger piece. At one point, Ford was faced with a large turnover of his labor force. His solution was to pay the unheard of sum of $5 an hour, and at the same time, providing educational and health enhancing opportunities for employees. (Editor’s note: On January 5, 1914, Henry Ford announced a minimum five dollar salary for all eligible employees working eight-hour days. That would be $157.27 in today’s money!) One inadvertent happy outcome was that the large workforce was able to buy their own Model Ts. Ford worked both sides of the supply/demand curve. His employees had more discretionary income and his factories provided the production.

And so it is with the FAIRtax. With no withholding for income and payroll taxes, everyone will enjoy a minimum of a 15% raise. With no tax on corporate income, or capital gains tax, offshore accounts will come back to the United States for investment in new production and distribution. Individual savings and investment will expand as well.

Ford's competitors thought he was nuts. A few years later they were forced to imitate his methods or perish. If the United States adopts the FAIRtax, the EU, China and everybody else will have to imitate us out of self-defense.

Editor’s Note: David Boone is our District Director for the First Congressional District of Minnesota. David was born and raised in Montgomery County, Indiana, and points out that Montgomery County is the cradle of Hoosierland basketball. David went to elementary and secondary school all twelve years in the same building. He studied at Wabash College, after which he had various jobs, eventually retiring following twenty years with Sears as an appliance technician with a home entertainment specialty.

David became enamored of The FAIRtax about twenty years ago. He says he “fixes stuff and knows things,” including interesting facts about Ford Motors. David lives in Houston, Minnesota. We thank him for this submission.

I would love to hear a comparison from you about similarities between the FAIRtax and other enterprises we encounter.
