TOMORROW IS TAX DAY!

Tomorrow is the deadline for filing the individual IRS Form 1040. FAIRtax supporters need to be sure their returns are filed so they can go out and make noise to let people know that we have a better way.
If you file your return by mail, the envelope must be postmarked tomorrow. If you file your return electronically, by TurboTax for example, you need to click “send” by tomorrow. If your return is late, you could be subject to a penalty of five percent of the tax owed for each month, or part of a month, for which the return is late.
In addition, you could be subject to interest compounding daily at the federal short-term rate plus three percent annually from the date your taxes are due until they are fully paid. According to Notice 433, the late payment rate is six percent annually until October 1, 2025, after which the rate goes up to seven percent.
You do not get interest from Uncle Sam if you overpay your taxes or if you pay them early.
If you are not ready to file, you can request an extension by filing IRS Form 4868 by tomorrow. The Form 4868 requires you to estimate your tax and pay it but extends the time for most calendar-year taxpayers to October 15, 2025 to file without a late filing penalty. Any underpayment incurs interest.
One of our FAIRtax slogans years ago was, “Let’s Make It Just Another Day!”
Maybe we should bring that slogan back for the month of April. What do you think?
Before electronic filing became popular, our groups would often assemble in front of post offices with signs promoting the FAIRtax and sign-up sheets. You can still do that, but you should speak with the local Postmaster first. Post Office rules prohibit picketing and leafleting inside Post Office buildings and resting anything on the ground of exterior Post Office property. Detailed rules are available here: https://about.usps.com/posters/pos7.pdf. Use common sense and do not block or interfere with people seeking to use postal facilities.
If you have other plans in mind, check with your local authority. True, you have a First Amendment right to peacefully assemble in public spaces, but local authorities may set reasonable time-place-manner requirements. If you plan to go to a train station or bus stop, check with those operators. Always stay on the right side of the rules.
I would love to hear your ideas of how to spread the FAIRtax message tomorrow, Tax Day. Please let me know at Jim.Bennett@fairtax.org.
