When people think of earthquakes in the U.S., most think of California. It is the home of five of the ten largest earthquakes in the U.S. However, the largest earthquake in California was the 7.9 magnitude on the Richter scale in 1857.
Beginning on December 16, 1811, some of the largest earthquakes in U.S. history slammed the Mississippi River Valley near New Madrid, Missouri, 8.6 magnitude on the Richter scale. Labeled the New Madrid earthquakes, they affected a 30,000 square mile area. Additional quakes continued for several months and five were over 8.0 magnitude.
THE TRUMP EARTHQUAKE
On November 8, 2016, with the election of Trump, many people consider this the biggest potential upheaval since Ronald Reagan. Trump’s words and his cabinet nominees promise that many of the policies of the last twenty years will either be uprooted and tossed out or revised substantially.
FAIRTAX OPPORTUNITY
One of the opportunities that the Trump election provides is to really have fundamental tax reform. Trump is not encumbered by the “accepted” principle that you have to only make small changes in the tax law. He is not beholden to the lobbyists who make a large part of their income because of the income tax code.
He has shown a willingness to take on anyone that is acting only “in their own best interest.” Trump says that he wants all of America to win. Ironically, passing the FAIRtax will help everyone. As John Kennedy said, “A rising tide lifts all boats.”
CONCLUSION
In 1992, I was the luncheon speaker at a meeting of the Tax Committee of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. All the attendees were heads of large tax departments for the largest U.S. corporations. My topic was replacing the present income tax system with a national retail sales tax.
There were a number of questions about how it would work but many of them were critical. Many were familiar with complying with state retail sales taxes and with value added taxes in Europe. However, it seemed that all of them dismissed my proposal as somewhat whimsical and not practical—with two exceptions.
One was the tax director of a major corporation that came up to me after the talk and said that he appreciated my comments and thought my proposal was clearly the best way to go. However, he said that my proposal would largely eliminate the jobs of the people in the room. This, unfortunately, colored their opinions. He laughed and said that he was retiring in two years and it would take that long to pass so he supported me.
The other exception was the president of a large corporation who was hosting the event. He came over to me and said that the tax professionals could only see the walls of the room that they inhabited. However, as the CEO he had to see everything in the room but also outside the room and that the present system was so complicated and wasteful it was crazy. He said that the national retail sales tax replacement would be the best for the nation.
My point is that, like the tax professionals that can see only the limited area around them, many Members of Congress and the D.C. Elites can only see making changes to the income tax. Trump and many of his appointees are business people who see the harmful effects of the income tax. Trump and his appointees very well may adopt the thinking expressed by these words of George Bernard Shaw, “You see things; and you say ‘Why?’ But I dream things that never were; and I say ‘Why not?’”
Why not do the right thing? PASS THE FAIRTAX!
THE ELITES AND TAX REFORM
There is continued clamor for tax reform in the first part of 2017. There is also a continuing stream of releases from D.C. that promise that now they will “fix” the broken income tax system. Of course, their idea of a “fix” is to keep the same structure in place so that they can profit from selling exceptions in future years.
Americans For Fair Taxation “(AFFT”) is one of the few worthy activities that does not spend your funds on salaries or even office space. It is a group composed of people who are donating their time and even paying their own expenses.
AFFT has been working for a long time to educate people about the FAIRtax. Oscar Wilde said, "You can always judge a man by the quality of his enemies." If you agree with this sentiment, then look at the enemies of the AFFT. It is not the people. It is the D.C. elites who profit from the existing income tax/payroll tax system—even though it is obviously harming the U.S.

FAIRtax Power Radio
The FAIRtax Guys will hold their first Facebook Live event on Tuesday December 20th at 8 PM ET.
