More Progress In Iowa
We mentioned in a recent issue of Grassroots Corner Claude Mertzenich in Iowa continues to pound the staff of his Democratic representative, Abby Finkenauer.
Claude has been making progress. Here is Claude’s report:
“Wow! I had a GREAT 20-minute meeting with Steffanie Bezruki, Rep. Finkenauer’s Legislative Director. I did NOT get shut out.
She asked a question about whether exports would have The FAIRtax applied, and I said a definite “NO!”, and that includes agricultural products; Iowa is the world’s largest corn producer, so it’s pretty important around here.
I also spent time explaining how the Prebate works, and how the Prebate makes The FAIRtax progressive, which is extremely important to Democrats.
“I summarized The FAIRtax along the lines of the points in the Representative’s issues page Doing that was a GREAT suggestion by Scott [Monroe], and I believe it has strengthened my relationship with the Representative’s office. Now I need to do the same with Senator Ernst and State Representative [Michael R.] Bergan On Bergan’s page it says he’s an accountant; I hope he’s not an income-tax accountant for his sole income [Editor's note: even if he does, when The FAIRtax passes, he will switch his efforts, as will all Accountants, to wealth creation from "tax avoidance"].
“Steffanie was curious about The FAIRtax and did not have a knee-jerk reaction against it. To me, that’s a big positive“.
Claude makes a point that one cannot assume Democrats are hostile to The FAIRtax, any more so than Republicans. He writes:
“Even at the county Republican meeting last week, where I presented The FAIRtax, there was a guy who kept saying over and over that they had tried it in Canada, found the tax to be insufficient, and brought back the income-tax on top of it. [Editor’s note: Where did the gentleman pull that one from?!]
I kept responding that they have NOT tried The FAIRtax in Canada and that AFFT is NOT proposing a dual sales tax income-tax-system. Other people there, though, were very supportive and even signed my petition.
I heard from at least one republican at the meeting that he was pleased Representative Finkenauer, while a Democrat, did not seem to be an all-out-Pelosi Democrat, so that too is positive for The FAIRtax".
Keep going Claude! Does anyone else have a report of a visit to a Congress member? Congress members and their staff are eager to see Constituents who want to meet with them.
The best strategy is to focus on the subject matter at hand, regardless of where your Congress member stands on other issues. The Congress member and their staff will respect you for it.
