Our Pledge To Posterity
Late last month I became the Grandfather of a fourth boy and asked myself, “What kind of a world will I leave him?” And I wonder what I can do now to make the world just a little better.
For sure my Grandson will face the challenges everybody else is talking about. My grandson will be affected by the environment. He may be drawn into mass conflict. Drug abuse, family instability, crime and social isolation run unabated, and no cure has been found yet for many cancers, dementia, HIV-Aids and heart disease. Will my Grandson face those problems as well as adverse peer pressure?
There are many reasons for hope. The environment is cleaner. World poverty is lower, and the world’s population promises to stabilize by the year 2050 when my grandson will see his 31st birthday.
But there is 1 challenge which isn’t receiving enough attention, and it will be catastrophic.
Fiscal and monetary irresponsibility.
The media doesn’t talk about these issues because most people have a hard time wrapping their heads around them. But central banks today are forced to keep manhole covers on interest rates to allow the State to carry untenable levels of debt. The fiscal debt is just the sliver of the iceberg above water. Unfunded promises by the State lurk below. Medicare, on its present course, will run out of money 6 years from now, and Social Security will follow by 2035.
My grandson will pay in plenty and receive nothing!
What does The FAIRtax have to do with fixing these problems? Plenty. First, The FAIRtax base is more stable. When times are good, revenues rise less, forcing politicians to be more prudent. When times sour, revenues drop less, allowing governments to meet rising demand for social services.
Second, The FAIRtax lets consumers and voters see how much their government costs. Consumers and voters see 83% of the bill (except for borrowing) each time they have a latte. When government spends more, making the latte dearer, consumers lose patience. Such dissatisfaction should be happening today, but it isn’t. My grandson, hopefully, will be more assertive. Lastly, The FAIRtax will stop taxing capital and labor, giving my grandson more opportunity.
It’s a privilege for me to be part of a movement which can help make a better world for my Grandson. This New Year 2020, I resolve to do a better job growing The FAIRtax Grassroots. That will be my part. If each of us does his or her part for The FAIRtax, we can look our children and grandchildren in the eye and tell them we did something to leave their world just a little better than we found it.
What is your FAIRtax resolution for 2020?
Yours In Liberty!
