It’s good to remember promises members of Congress make to you. Following an election debate with then sitting Rep. Leonard Lance (NJ-07), we gave candidate Tom Malinowski a packet of materials on The FAIRtax as well as our contact information. The candidate promised he would read the materials and we never heard from him again.
In the 2018 election, Malinowski defeated Lance and became the Rep. of NJ-07. Two weeks ago Rep. Malinowski held a Town Hall in the Public Library of Summit, NJ. We appeared in FAIRtax blue knit shirts and asked to be called on. To our pleasant surprise, we were.
We reminded the Rep. of his promise during his debate with Leonard Lance and asked if he would become a co-sponsor of HR25, The Fair Tax Act of 2019. Obviously put on the spot, Rep. Malinowski asked if we would be willing to explain the bill. We gave the 3-minute elevator speech to about 100-150 attendees in his audience.
The Chief of Staff, apparently in an attempt to save face, called out they were “very familiar” with the bill and the bill had not yet been scored by the CBO. The Rep. replied he was always willing to look at ideas which are “outside the box”. He personally favored a progressive tax and cited our claim the bill is revenue-neutral.
I pointed out there are studies pointing to the conclusion the bill is actually mildly revenue-positive and our plan is progressive. We will set up a meeting shortly.
In other NJ activity, pictured here are Tom “Sarge” Haschuk & David Baron at our FAIRtax table at the Cranford, NJ Street Fair. There was a lot of interest and engagement.
Let us know about activity in your state, including Congressional town halls.
