FRUSTRATING THE SWAMP

It must be frustrating to the well-heeled denizens of the Swamp who direct millions of dollars to Members of Congress who are “friends”—meaning that they don’t change the profitable system that benefits them at the expense of the rest of us--when they see the “little people” with no money upset a friend of the Swamp.
 
This is what happened in the recent Republican Primary for Governor of Florida.  Paul Livingston, a board member of the Florida Fair Tax Educational Association, decided to write a press release exposing what really happened when one of the candidates, Congressman Ron DeSantis, was attacked for his support of the FAIRtax.

In the Florida primary election for the Republican governor’s nomination between Agriculture Commissioner Adam Putnam and Congressman Ron DeSantis, television ads and mailers about the FAIRtax were used to spread misinformation about the FAIRtax and to fault Congressman DeSantis for his co-sponsoring the FAIRtax bill.  
 
You, the Florida FAIRtax community, knew these ads were lies and misleading.  You took action with loud voices to speak the truth about the FAIRtax using social media, phone calls and letters to the media, politicians and friends.  Congressman DeSantis, the FAIRtax co-sponsor, won the election by 20 points.  The lesson?  That enough Florida voters understand the FAIRtax and this helped increase Congressman DeSantis’ margin of victory. 
 
To spread this news the Florida FAIRtax Educational Association sent a national press release, see below, with the headline of “Truth Wins Florida election”.  This release was viewed by over one thousand readers on the Business wire site; and over 240 online and mobile media outlets with 43.6 million unique visitors per month have passed on our press release to their audiences. This is good news; however, it is the best we can do with available resources that include using the free social media and the FAIRtax Guys weekly radio show.

OCALA, Fla.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Florida Agriculture Commissioner Adam Putnam was expected to have an easy victory and win the Florida Republican gubernatorial primary with a June poll lead of 20 points. Once President Trump endorsed Representative DeSantis, he pulled ahead in the polls. Then a Putnam PAC attacked DeSantis for supporting the FAIRtax, bill HR 25. The election gave DeSantis a victory of 56% to Putnam’s 37%.

The TV ads and mailers attacking Congressman Ron DeSantis as a FAIRtax co-sponsor were full of misinformation about the FAIRtax and implied that the FAIRtax would raise all prices by 23%, destroy Florida tourism, destroy families and basically destroy Florida. The ads labeled DeSantis a Washington insider even though the FAIRtax is hated inside the beltway by lobbyists, special interests, politicians who like power and control, crony capitalists and tax lawyers.
 
Per Steve Hayes, President of Americans for Fair Taxation, “One political consultant told me that the social media comments were the most negative for any candidate’s ad that he had ever seen. Almost all of the comments were pointing out untruths in the ads and switching support to Mr. DeSantis. The attack ads were driving people away from Putnam and to DeSantis.” Some political operatives have estimated that the negative FAIRtax ads may have helped account for Mr. DeSantis’ victory margin.

Members of Congress have expressed concern about co-sponsoring the FAIRtax in fear opponents distorting the facts about the FAIRtax and scaring enough voters for them to be defeated. While any position might offend some, a position that is supported by a vocal minority can provide the margin to victory.
 
The impact of the negative ads signifies that enough voters now understand the FAIRtax and when lies are told about it, the false and misleading message is recognized as lies. Voters logically ask how anyone can oppose such a commonsense idea and if someone is going to distort the FAIRtax truth, then how can they be trusted at all?
 
The FAIRtax empowers all legal residents and puts them in charge of how much money they have for consumption and how much federal tax they pay. CONCLUSION

Gone are the times that the Swamp and their minions could win votes by issuing untruths about the FAIRtax.  Elvis Presley, said, “Truth is like the sun. You can shut it out for a time, but it ain't goin' away.”
 
Greater numbers of Americans are beginning to recognize that our country needs to eliminate a system of winners and losers determined by who pays the most money, not by what is right. These Americans will be ignored by the politicians at their peril.

WHAT CAN EACH OF US DO


Call up the local or D.C. offices of your House Member and two Senators and you can use the following script:

• I am sure that Representative ____ or Senator ____ is in favor of everyone obeying the income tax laws.
• After they assure you that their boss is not in favor of anyone breaking the law, ask if they are aware of the Cebula study showing $9 trillion of evaded income/payroll taxes over the next ten years.
• Since most will say they don’t believe their boss has seen the study, either drop off a copy or get an email address and send a copy to them for their boss.
• Say you are going to call back in a week and ask what the Representative or Senator is going to do to stop this evasion.
• In a week, call back and ask specifically what the Representative or Senator is going to do to enforce the law.
• They probably will say their boss believes that simplifying the income tax will handle the problem.
• Explain that when people evade income taxes, they are also evading the 15.3% payroll/Medicare tax and state income tax.  So it is unlikely that they are going to pay 30% or 40% when they were paying 0% because they have already decided it is okay to cheat.
• Say that the only way to reduce evasion is to increase by tens or hundreds of thousands the number of comprehensive IRS audits done each year.
• Point out that Evaders do not self-identify by putting an “E” on their income tax return.
• 80% of the people likely to be audited are trying to comply, but they will be forced to endure these IRS audits as well.
• Ask if the Member is in favor of this?
• If they say no, then ask again how the Member proposes to stop people breaking the income tax laws.
• Then explain that the way to handle evasion without unleashing the IRS audits is the FAIRtax.

If you can see your Member or attend a town hall and ask these questions, you can be even more effective.
