MEET CANDIDATE DAN MC KAUGHAN
Our latest FAIRtax candidate to sign the pledge is Dan McKaughan, TX-08, but perhaps equally interesting is how we found him. Our experience underscores that you, too, can reach a candidate with the FAIRtax message and get him/her to sign the FAIRtax pledge.
Dan McKaughan is a retired Navy veteran who flew helicopters. He says he sometimes misses taking a whirlybird out for a spin. He received an appointment to the United States Naval Academy, and in 1996 received his commission as an officer. That commissioning marked the start of a 20-year Navy career.
Dan says, the Navy taught him about service and dedication, first to the ship (the mission), then to his shipmates, and finally to himself. As is usually the case with military service, Dan often had to leave his wife and children for long periods of time in order to serve a greater good. Defending the rights of a free people isn’t always easy or convenient. Dan’s service has given him a love of liberty and a unique sense of what it means to be free.
Now Dan is serving his country by running for Congress. He cites outdated, overly complicated, and unfair taxation as one of his reasons for running. Dan adds that he is, “Sick and tired of an unfair tax system that manipulates people and is specifically designed to pit one group of people against another.”
So, how did we find Dan? FAIRtax-er John Gaver, author of The Rich Don’t Pay Taxes – or Do They?, lives in Dan’s Congressional District. John assigned himself the task of checking out all of the candidates in the race and trying to win them over to the FAIRtax. He started by checking every candidate’s web site looking for ones who expressed a particular interest in taxation as an issue. He was delighted to find the letters “IRS” with a slash through them near the very top of Dan’s campaign web site.
John reached out to Dan and began talking to him about how to eliminate the IRS. John persuaded Dan that there is only one way to do that: pass the FAIRtax.
The two gentlemen met for coffee, and John brought a video camera and a copy of the FAIRtax Candidate Pledge for 2022. Just prior to Dan’s signing the pledge, John asked him, “What do you think is the best part about the FAIRtax.” Without hesitation, Dan replied, “I think one of the best things about the FAIRtax is it minimizes the government in your life. And that’s one of the things I’m trying to do - that I’m running on - is to maximize your liberty, minimize government overreach. And I think the FAIRtax is one way to do that because it basically returns the power of taxation to the people.”
“And another thing I like about it is it’ll bring business from all over the world to the United States.”
Dan is running for the seat currently held by former Ways and Means Committee Chair Kevin Brady. Brady is retiring and will not seek re-election in 2022. You may remember that Brady was a FAIRtax cosponsor in previous Congresses, but did not sign back on to it in the current Congress. The primary election is scheduled for March of next year with an anticipated runoff in July.

It’s still early in the campaign season, and by reaching out to your candidates now, you may have a better chance of getting through to them. John got right through to Dan. That’s something he might not have been able to do later in the campaign.
Dan McKaughan was a fan of the FAIRtax from long ago. He had not heard much about it recently, and John’s contact woke him up. You can do the same with your candidates.
