CONGRATULATIONS FAIRTAX CANDIDATES WHO WON THEIR PRIMARIES
Let’s take a moment to congratulate two Congressional candidates who signed the FAIRtax pledge and won their party primaries.
First up is Steven Elliott, who won his Republican primary contest in the 12th Congressional District of Michigan. Steven defeated James Hooper and Hassan Nehme and will take on well-known incumbent Rashida Tlaib in the general election on November 8, 2022. There will be a minor party candidate on the ballot. We do not know the other candidates’ positions on the FAIRtax.
Next is Tina Forte, who won her Republican primary in the 14th Congressional District of New York. Tina had no opposition in the Republican Party and will take on well-known incumbent Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez in the general election on November 8, 2022. There will be two other party candidates. In New York, the Conservative party is not as minor as it is in other states. Its standard-bearer will be Desi Cuellar, a restaurant server and National Guard member. The other party is the Libertarian Party, whose candidate is attorney Jonathan Howe. We do not know where Ocasio-Cortez, Cuellar, or Howe stand on the FAIRtax.
Several of our pledge signers whose races have already been decided can try again next election cycle. They are: Dan McKaughan, TX-08, Jonathan Hullihan, TX-08, Jonathan Mitchell, TX-08, Jameson Ellis, TX-02, Martin Etwop, TX-02, Milam Langella, TX-02, Mike Saliba, MI-09, Alex Stovall, AZ-09, Jerrod Sessler, WA-04, Ronald Eller, MS-02, Rubin Young, FL-25 (the Trump-endorsed Republican winner, Carla Spalding, will face Debbie Wasserman-Schultz in November), Willie Montague, FL-10, and Thomas Watercott, NC-07. Several of these candidates faced well-entrenched Republican incumbents, including Dan Crenshaw in TX-02 (where FAIRtax-er John Gaver worked hard to get his six Texas pledge signers). Others faced Trump-endorsed opponents in the primary.
We think, based on an analysis of the 2010 election by then State Director Steve Curtis, that candidates who actively campaign on the FAIRtax are six times more likely to win an election and can erase the advantage of an incumbent. Candidates who casually support the FAIRtax can enhance their chances threefold. Our pledge signers can try again.
The race for one pledge signer has yet to be formally decided, although Allen Waters, RI-01, has no opposition in the Republican primary. He will face incumbent David Cicilline on November 8, 2022. Allen can put our analysis to the test.
Many of our current cosponsors will return to Congress in January.
I would love to hear from you about candidates who take an unusual interest and who might become FAIRtax pledge signers. Next year it will be time to start over with the pledges.
