LTE: The only FAIR Tax is a Sales Tax
Richard Garrett of Rome, Georgia, really gets it! In his letter to the editor of the Rome News-Tribune, he writes:
“DEAR EDITOR:
“Y’all haven’t figured it out yet. We, the people of Floyd County, are being played.
“First, our government leaders have raised our property values. This has raised our taxes by value. Then they don’t roll back our millage rate. That means our taxes are going up. So, they hold our hands and tell us it won’t hurt too bad.
“What they are not telling us is the governor has signed a bill giving us hundreds of dollars of relief on our property taxes. So, it will hurt only a little! Bless our governor. Shame on our commissioners.
“The only fair tax is a sales tax. It charges everyone — the criminals, the drug dealers, the rich, the poor, the illegals, and our commissioners.”
We think Mr. Garrett is a FAIRtax fan. He certainly understands how easy it is to tell people that sales taxes such as the FAIRtax can be good.
Mr. Garrett also highlights a problem with property taxes. Most of us like to see people improve their properties because improving properties improves the neighborhood and raises other property values. But when a property owner undertakes a home improvement, he or she gets a visit from the tax assessor with a compliment for the improvement and a bill. Sales taxation avoids that problem.
If Mr. Garrett refers to a rebate from the State of Georgia for property tax relief, he describes a system that takes property taxes with one hand and gives them back with the other. Meanwhile, the money has a night out on the town in Atlanta before it comes back.
I would love to read your letters to your local editor.
