MEET CANDIDATE MARISSA SELVIG
You never know when someone who heard about the FAIRtax long ago will ignite an enthusiast today. A supporter in Lusk, Wyoming, an hour east of Casper, struck up a casual conversation with Marissa Selvig about the FAIRtax. Next thing you know, Marissa found herself signing the FAIRtax pledge as a Congressional Candidate. Here is a picture and a video of her just after the event, with her 13-year-old daughter, who just finished a class in school on budgeting and withholding.
Marissa is not originally from Wyoming. She went to college in Wisconsin, majoring in Speech Communication and Theater with a minor Musical Theatre. She and her husband, a mental health professional, moved to Riverton, Wyoming in 2010 for her husband’s work. Riverton is just about in the dead center of the state. The couple loves Wyoming.
Marissa describes herself as a stay-at-home mom, but she has done professional theater and worked as a freelance musician. She also has had a part-time position at Central Wyoming College in Riverton. In 2017 she started a side business selling Kombucha tea.
Marissa and her husband have full-time jobs taking care of their four children, ages six, eight, eleven, and of course, the thirteen-year-old who appears in her pledge-signing video.
When asked how she got into politics, Marissa says she has always been a "political junkie." At age ten, she started listening to Rush Limbaugh. Years later, she ran for Municipal Council in Pavillion, Wyoming, and afterward served as Mayor. That experience taught her the art of solving government problems where they matter most - at the local level.
So, just how did Marissa become involved in FAIRtax? Marissa says she is new to the FAIRtax, and that a citizen in Riverton introduced her to it. Marissa liked what she heard and felt excited to dig in and learn more. She read "The Fair Tax Book: Saying Goodbye to the Income Tax and the IRS” and is about to pick up “FairTax: The Truth: Answering the Critics,” both authored by Neal Boortz and John Linder. Her excitement shows.
When asked what she likes about the FAIRtax, Marissa enthusiastically replies, “I like the whole thing!” She especially loves the part about getting rid of the IRS, and she knows just how much that will save. She quotes the annual IRS budget as $11.91954 billion in the 116th Congress.
Marissa believes that the FAIRtax is the most practical solution to taxation and calls on FAIRtax volunteers to work hard at educating more citizens about the beauty and simplicity of the FAIRtax.
Marissa is facing a good bit of competition in her Congressional bid as several candidates are running in the primary. In addition to Marissa, incumbent Liz Cheney is being challenged by Anthony Bouchard, Chuck Gray, Bryan Keller, and Bryan Miller – all Republicans. In Wyoming, whoever wins the Republican Primary becomes the next Member of Congress from Wyoming’s at-large seat.
At the moment, we don’t know where any of the other challengers stand on the FAIRtax. The primary election is on August 16. Marissa is getting a good head start.
Marissa rejects negative campaigning. When asked about her strategy, Marissa says she is just working hard to show people who she is. She offers courage, virtue, honesty, and transparency in government. To learn more about Marissa’s candidacy, go to www.selvigforcongress.com. You will note under the “Issues” tab of her landing page, she specifically mentions the FAIRtax.
Do you know someone like Marissa Selvig? If so, I would love to hear from you.
