Meet our new Board Member, Dr. Tony Urbanek
Dr. Tony Urbanek, a FAIRtax fan for many years, was elected to our Board of Directors on January 9, 2024. He knows our Advisory Board Chair, former Arkansas Governor, and TV Host, Mike Huckabee.
Tony holds a B.S. in Chemistry from John Carroll University, Cleveland Ohio, a D.D.S. from Indiana University School of Dentistry, and M.S.in Cell Biology and Anatomy from Indiana University School of Medicine, and an M.D from Vanderbilt University School of Medicine, Nashville, Tennessee, along with his training as an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon. Tony was also a Research Fellow in Facial Growth and Development at the National Institute of Health.
But what stands out most is his story of helping 76 million women in the United States who suffer from TMD. TMD is a disorder of the jaw muscles, temporomandibular joints, and nerves associated with chronic facial pain. Ninety percent of those who suffer from this disorder are women. Tony, an oral and maxillofacial surgeon, decided that he was dissatisfied with dispensing standard treatments. He told his staff he wanted to invite all future TMD/TMJ patients for a consultation rather than for surgery.
Over the next few months, Tony interviewed twenty-four women, asking them, “What is the phase of the moon when it hurts?” “What does your husband think about the problem?” “Does the dog bark when it hurts?” “What makes it better/worse?” “What is the weather like when you have symptoms?” He encouraged the women to tell him everything they could about the problem.
The answer that emerged was remarkable. Twelve of the women told Tony, “If I place a pencil eraser/my finger/my tongue between my front teeth and bite down, it feels better.” Tony fashioned a device and gave it to the first woman on his list who had twenty years of headache, earache, neck pain, and dizziness. He told her to keep it in her mouth 24/7, except when she eats, and return in three weeks.
Three weeks later, she returned and told Tony, "Thanks, Doc, my pain is gone!” Tony recalls taking two steps back and nearly falling over. From that beginning, Tony invented, developed, and patented the “Urbanek Device and Protocol.” How the device and protocol works is not complicated. Separating the posterior teeth over two months, followed by using the device for sleeping, the patient experiences relief from the symptoms. There had been dental and basic scientific literature for sixty years indicating this fix - but in separate buckets. Tony combined the two.
Tony launched TMJ Services LLC in 2013 to support manufacturing and distributing his non-surgical, FDA-approved, and independently university-study-validated device and protocol. He has a manufacturing facility.
His success should come as no surprise. It comes from his two core beliefs. First, “If you can properly identify and define the problem,” Tony says, “You can create the solution.” And then, “If you can’t find the answer to a problem, you are looking in the wrong place, asking the wrong person, or the wrong question.”
Tony asserts, “I like to fix things.” And fix things he does. Aside from his device and protocol, he started medical clinics in Jamaica and Haiti. In Haiti, he literally persuaded patients to forsake witch doctors for medical treatment. Tony is also an avid pilot and past President of the Flying Physicians Association. Other accolades in Tony's resume are too numerous to fit in a Grassroots Corner.
Yes, fix things he will, as Tony now turns his attention from disorders of the jaw to disorders of the Tax Code. Tony can access all Congressional Districts in his native Tennessee on a same-day trip by air. He is prominent in the Tennessee Republican Party, persuading Tennessee Senator Marsha Blackburn to cosponsor the FAIRtax when she represented Tennessee’s Seventh Congressional District.
Tony has been an avid supporter of the FAIRtax since 1991, when he first met our President, Steve Hayes. As early as 1991, he sent materials educating and supporting the FairTax to 500 doctors in his professional network throughout Middle Tennessee. In 2014, he founded Fair Tax Tennessee Inc., which is proud to be included and supported by the AFFT central organization today.
Tony lives in Brentwood, Tennessee, with his life's greatest joy centered on his wife, Ann, three children, seven grandchildren, and one great-grandchild. All live in beautiful Williamson County, Tennessee.
