BRIEFING CONGRESS MEMBER JEFF VAN DREW
Written by Jim “Mil” Milroy, former New Jersey State FAIRtax Director, Marmora, New Jersey
In late April, Jim Bennett and I had a meeting with Congressman Jefferson Van Drew (NJ-02), about the Fair Tax. Some may remember that Democrat Van Drew replaced Republican Frank Lobiondo, then switched parties during his first term. He won re-election as a Republican in 2020.
Congressman Van Drew started his political career as a local councilman and worked his way up through county and state elected office. He also maintained his dental practice until his election to federal office.
Joining us in the meeting was Ocean City, New Jersey, Councilman Bob Barr. Bob might remember that a few years ago I asked to make a FairTax presentation to the Ocean City Democrat Club that he led. Also participating by phone was the congressman’s tax legislative aide, Scott Weldon.
Jim distributed copies of his powerpoint presentation and got to work. He was not interrupted, possibly because they had another conference call scheduled after our meeting. The FAIRtax seemed to be a new concept to them. Jim’s presentation highlighted aspects of the FAIRtax specific to the second district, such as anyone winning in an Atlantic City casino would keep all their winnings.
It was a good first meeting. There are a lot of second district constituents who know of and support the FairTax and it will help if they contact the congressman’s office. Please call 609-625-5008 for the Mays Landing, New Jersey, office and 202-225-6572 for Washington, DC.
Jim “Mil” Milroy is a former New Jersey State and Second Congressional District FairTax Director.
[Editor’s note: we thank Mil for participating, for this excellent writeup, and for his keen observations of how the Congressman and staff reacted. We will be planning our follow-up.]
