FAIRtax at the North Carolina State GOP Convention
President Steve Hayes, FAIRtax Guy Bob Scarborouth, Jim Bennett, FAIRtax Guy Bob Paxton, and NC State Director Laura McCue
FAIRtax was a sponsor at the North Carolina State GOP Convention thanks to our new supporter and fundraiser, Jeff Minch. There will be more about Jeff in a future Grassroots Corner. Jeff got us a sponsorship at half the usual cost and access to prominent movers and shakers in the Tar Heel State.
The FAIRtax table was nicely busy during the NCGOP Convention. Lots of great questions and discussions came from the attendees. Over forty left their contact information for State Director Laura McCue to follow up and try to recruit volunteers. Many simply came up to the sign-up sheet and left information without speaking to anyone. Laura thanked those volunteers who traveled from other states to help as well as thanking those from North Carolina.
Laura, Chairman and President Steve Hayes, and Jeff Minch spoke privately with several North Carolina legislators and potential legislators about the FAIRtax the possibly of getting North Carolina to replace its state income tax. Many candidates expressed interest.
The only official business at the convention was to vote for a party chairman. As we left, the decision remained pending. But the event gave every state and local candidate the opportunity to show their stuff for next year.
Several 2024 Presidential Candidates spoke at the main events, including Donald Trump, Ron DeSantis, and Mike Pence.
Jim Bennett found it interesting how many statewide offices in North Carolina are elected. Our neighbor next door was running for Labor Commissioner. In Jim’s state, the only statewide elected offices are the Governor and, more recently, the Lieutenant Governor, who runs on the same ticket as the Governor.
And a trip to North Carolina would not be complete without a trip to Mr. Barbecue in nearby Winston-Salem to enjoy Carolina style barbecue and Cheerwine. Now Cheerwine is not really a wine, but a cherry flavored soda that’s made in nearby Salisbury, North Carolina. It goes well with everything, but especially with barbecue. Hush puppies of course completed the meal. North Carolina native and now Florida resident, Bob Paxton, hosted the outing.
Bob drove us by the Reynolds Building in Winston-Salem, which for decades was the corporate headquarters of the RJ Reynolds Tobacco Company. The iconic structure was completed in 1929 and was the model for the Empire State Building which was completed a couple of years later. On the 50th birthday of the Reynolds building, the executives of the Empire State Building sent the Reynolds executives a thank-you card.
FAIRtax is non-partisan and does not favor Republicans over Democrats. We would be glad to have a table at a Democrat convention. I would love to hear if you have any connections to such an event.
