AUDIT THE FED
FAIRtax volunteers have a new pool of Members of Congress from which to fish for cosponsors for the FAIRtax. Sixty members of the House of Representatives have cosponsored the so-called “Audit the Fed” bill, i.e., the Federal Reserve Transparency Act of 2023, HR24. Thirty-eight of those cosponsors have not cosponsored the FAIRtax.
The “Audit the Fed” bill directs the Government Accountability Office (“GAO”) to complete an audit of the Federal Reserve Board and Federal Reserve banks. The Federal Reserve already receives internal audits from independent outside auditors, but this bill requires auditing by the GAO, which reports to Congress.
The Federal Reserve has long drawn criticism for not meeting its goals of greater economic stability and low inflation. Moreover, Ronald Reagan's former Budget Director, David Stockman, criticized the Federal Reserve for the absence of market discovery of interest rates that would exist in a better-distributed banking system.
Many FAIRtax supporters lament the fact that the Federal Reserve was created in 1913 alongside the Sixteenth Amendment which ushered in the Federal income tax. Many FAIRtax-ers argue that those who favor reining in the Federal Reserve should also favor eliminating the income tax and the IRS. The argument is undoubtedly an angle worth trying.
If your Member of Congress has cosponsored the “Audit the Fed” bill but not the FAIRtax, contact your Representative’s office and ask that he/she get on board with the FAIRtax as well. If you need to find out who your Congress Member is, go to the following link and type in your ZIP code (sometimes, ZIP+4): https://www.house.gov/representatives/find-your-representative.
If you prefer to contact your Representative by phone, their phone number will appear on the page where you land. Staff will note calls that come in supporting the FAIRtax.
If you prefer to send your Representative an electronic message, click on the link below your Representative's picture where you land, and you will arrive at their web page. That page will contain a "Contact" form.
