Simplify property-tax relief for seniors, lawmakers are urged

As state lawmakers consider an election-year proposal to boost property-tax relief for senior homeowners, they’re also being urged to help seniors by simplifying New Jersey’s existing relief programs.

Among the key issues raised during more than two hours of testimony before a state Assembly committee last week were concerns about how difficult and confusing it can be for many seniors when they apply for state-funded property-tax relief.

For starters, there are currently five different state-administered programs designed to help seniors, homeowners and renters deal with property-tax bills that now average close to $9,500 annually in New Jersey.
