THE PASSING OF A GREAT FAIRTAX LEADER AND A GREAT FRIEND

Tom Brown was a friend of mine and fellow warrior in the fight to bring the FAIRtax to America.  When the transition to a grass-roots controlled organization was being accomplished in 2014, Tom was right there working to make it happen.  When asked to take on a task or be available for a telephone call he was never “too busy.”  Making the restructured AFFT successful was very important to him and he made it a priority.  Tom applied this same energy to working with the Georgia leaders to make sure that Georgians for Fair Taxation was successful in insisting that the Georgia Members of Congress endorse the FAIRtax and also with the introduction and promotion of a state FAIRtax bill.

Tom will be missed by all.  The following
was provided by the leadership of Georgians For Fair Taxation who are grateful that Tom gave so generously of his time, energy and resources to a cause in which he wholeheartedly believed.  Any success we enjoy is due in large part to his efforts.

It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Georgians For Fair Taxation’s (GFFT) Chief Operating Officer, Tom Brown.  Tom lost his battle with brain cancer on February 15, 2018.

Tom has been an active FairTax leader since 2003. He was State Director for several years and on the Board of Directors of GFFT for even longer. His greatest contributions to the FairTax cause occurred while he was Chief Operating Officer. Tom took this organization from a group of people who met to talk about taxes to one that is making real progress in creating and implementing a state FairTax bill.

Tom insisted on applying a process to move the FairTax forward. With the help of other supporters, Tom created a very detailed action plan to have a state FairTax bill created and evaluated by economic experts. The action plan also included steps for getting the legislation sponsored and eventually passed in the legislature. He revised the action plan as needed and monitored our progress on an on-going basis. Tom often said that his job was to be a thorn in our sides, to bug us to get our jobs done and move the cause forward. He wanted progress, not just talk.

We have made much of the progress that Tom was seeking. We have a workable FairTax bill. It has sponsors in the state legislature. With our continued efforts, it will gain enough sponsors and supporters in the legislature to pass into law. Without Tom’s drive, devotion, and determination, we wouldn’t be where we are now. All who believe in the FairTax owe Tom a debt of gratitude.

Tom was born on December 21, 1941 and attended high school in Alabama. He earned a PhD in physics from Georgia Tech and worked for Georgia Tech Research Institute for 32 years before retiring in 2004. He was a softball coach for about 20 years, and he coached his granddaughters in softball and his grandsons in baseball. He was also a deacon in his church. Tom learned to fly a plane at the age of 60 and was an instrument rated private pilot.

Tom is survived by his wife, Donna, and three daughters. The family will receive visitors on Friday, February 23, 2018 from 5:00 to 7:00 pm at Dahlonega Funeral Home at 20 Gibson Road, Dahlonega, GA. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, February 24, 2018 at 1:00 pm at North Avenue Presbyterian Church at 607 Peachtree Street, Atlanta, GA.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that tribute donations be made to the American Brain Tumor Association in the name of C. Thomas Brown. Donations can be made online at www.abta.org or by check payable to ABTA at 8550 W. Bryn Mawr Ave., Suite 550, Chicago, IL 60631.

WHAT CAN EACH OF US DO

Call up the local or D.C. offices of your House Member and two Senators and you can use the following script:

  • I am sure that Representative ____ or Senator ____ is in favor of everyone obeying the income tax laws.
  • After they assure you that their boss is not in favor of anyone breaking the law, ask if they are aware of the Cebula study showing $9 trillion of evaded income/payroll taxes over the next ten years.
  • Since most will say they don’t believe their boss has seen the study, either drop off a copy or get an email address and send a copy to them for their boss.
  • Say you are going to call back in a week and ask what the Representative or Senator is going to do to stop this evasion.
  • In a week, call back and ask specifically what the Representative or Senator is going to do to enforce the law.
  • They probably will say their boss believes that simplifying the income tax will handle the problem.
  • Explain that when people evade income taxes, they are also evading the 15.3% payroll/Medicare tax and state income tax.  So it is unlikely that they are going to pay 30% or 40% when they were paying 0% because they have already decided it is okay to cheat.
  • Say that the only way to reduce evasion is to increase by tens or hundreds of thousands the number of comprehensive IRS audits done each year.
  • Point out that Evaders do not self-identify by putting an “E” on their income tax return.
  • 80% of the people likely to be audited are trying to comply, but they will be forced to endure these IRS audits as well.
  • Ask if the Member is in favor of this?
  • If they say no, then ask again how the Member proposes to stop people breaking the income tax laws.
  • Then explain that the way to handle evasion without unleashing the IRS audits is the FAIRtax.

If you can see your Member or attend a town hall and ask these questions, you can be even more effective.
