FAIRTAX AT THE FRAT HOUSE

“I want to thank you for this invitation to speak,” said Jim Bennett to the Brothers of Rho of Delta Kappa Epsilon at Lafayette College, Easton, Pennsylvania, “My wife also thanks you for this invitation because every minute I am speaking to you about the FAIRtax is a minute I am not speaking to her about it, and she is desperate for the reprieve.” That line drew a few smiles.

The Brothers of Rho of DKE have a program to invite alumni from time to time to come to campus and to the House (pictured below) to speak.

Public and Alumni Relations Chair, Ben Morgenthal, Major in Economics, Class of 2020, extended the invitation to Jim, Class of 1970, and the Brothers could not have been more gracious.

The Wednesday evening program lasted about thirty minutes. We honored the time limit because the Brothers had either classes or tests the next day, or athletic practices or even tests that evening. The Brothers were attentive throughout and asked thoughtful questions. We received a sign-up from the event.

We chose low-tech props in lieu of a PowerPoint presentation to avoid distraction from possible technical glitches. Props consisted of a lamp to illustrate purchasing power under the FAIRtax, a pen to illustrate the tax-inclusive principle, and a toy truck to illustrate the stark difference between a U-Haul one-way rental from LA to Houston and return. If anyone can find an authentic model of a U-Haul truck, the next presentation would be enhanced significantly.

We would like to thank the Brothers of Rho of DKE for the opportunity to present the FAIRtax. They earned the DKE national moniker of Gentlemen, Scholars and Jolly Good Fellows.

Jim isn’t the only FAIRtax-er hitting the campuses. Frank Wagener, below left, and California State Director, Marty Sturmer, below right, at Stanford University, Palo Alto, California, are a presence at several colleges and universities in the Bay Area, including Berkeley  and San Francisco State.

Frank and Marty are following a strategy of returning to the same venues multiple times. The theory is that multiple exposures to the FAIRtax message make the FAIRtax message register. Several students have already noted previous visits to campus. For now the two are treading lightly and not bringing a table. As time goes on, a registration table will appear.

If you have a relationship with a fraternity, sorority or social group at your alma mater, see if that group would be interested in hearing about the best tax plan ever, the FAIRtax. A presentation might be an entry to the school’s Economics Department. Whether or not you have a connection, a visit to a campus can be worthwhile. Today’s students are the people who soon will be the influencers of public policy.
